CB radios provide a gateway to similar information about local businesses, sights and activities. Cb radios are designed to be two-way devices. That is why they receive and they transmit. CB radios unlike walkie talkies are limited by FCC regulation to 4 watts of carrier power and operate on the CB radio band. The CB band was originally part of the amateur radio band but was opened up to the general public by the FCC.
Handheld CB radios are great for taking places. You can take them camping, in your car, in other peoples cars, in your house, and all kinds of other places and still enjoy CB radio fun. Handheld CB radios have a greater range than walkie-talkies, making them useful alternatives for people who enjoy wilderness activities. Handheld CB radios come with a rubber ducky antenna which is a flexible rubber antenna, or they can be connected to the same type of antenna the mobile units use with an adapter. Many upgrades are also available, such as external speakers for more volume on the road, new microphones, long range antennas, etc.
CB Radios are still sold in high volumes today, and both Cobra and Ranger USA have announced some exciting models. Cobra has merged Bluetooth technology with with their Cobra 29 series with their Cobra 29 LTD bluetooth, while Ranger USA has a model which has a built in MP3 player, full graphic display, and SD card slot and USB interface technologies. CB radios also give you access to traffic and weather information. Getting a CB radio installed and working properly isn't always as easy as buying it and plugging it in but it is not hard to get them setup and ready for use.
CB radios are still on the market and still used by individuals and corporations for genuine point-to-point communications. But as a societal common place, it's dead. CB radio users had their own language and their own call sign names, known as handles. Channel 9 was specifically designated for emergency calls to provide assistance for parties in trouble. CB radios are only permitted to operate at 5 watts which is about 4 watts out. Using any additional power is illegal and can many times cause interference to your neighbor's electronics appliances including such things as TVs, VCRs, Stereos, and even telephones.
